Over 1,000 electric-vehicle charging stations are destined for Oregon

PRLog (Pre ni ssan GTR specification ss Release) – Jun 08, 2011 – The fast chargers will be placed in Portland, Eugene, Salem and Corvallis as part of a plan to install 1,100 charging stations in Oregon by July, BP managers said October 13, 2010. Auto manufacturers and charging companies want to eliminate the anxiety electric-vehicle drivers could feel as they near the outer limits of their battery capacities.

The announcemen 2011 Chrysler 200 Convertible ts come as representatives of ECOtality Inc., a San Francisco company, sign up Oregon companies and retail chains as locations for publicly accessible chargers. Gov. Ted Kulongoski said in a statement 10/13/2010 that electric vehicles mean economic opportunity.

Oregon on 6/01/2011 announced it will install electric vehicle fast-charging stations along a 150-mile stretch of Interstate 5 from the California border to the Willamette Valley. It's the latest section of the "Green Highway," an effort to build a series of charging stations along the West Coast to let electric car owners drive from San Diego to Vancouver, British Columbia, without fear of running out of electrons.

California firm AeroVironment will install 480-volt "Level 3" charging stations in Oregon, which will let drivers top off a depleted raising chickens battery in 30 minutes or less versus eight hours or so for 220-240-volt chargers usually installed in private garages or on city streets. There is a catch: You need to drive an electric car capable of handling such high voltage, like the Chevrolet Volt. Such cars have two charging ports, one that can plug into a standard 110-volt household outlet and a 220 or 240-volt charger and a second one for a Level 3 fast-charger. "Fast charging stations along high-traffic transportation corridors will help make driving electric vehicles between communities a viable option for Oregonians," Art James, a project director with the Oregon Department of Transportation, said in a statement. Steven Gitlin, AeroVironment's vice president for marketing strategy and communications, said in an email that the company would initially install eight fast-char goverment technology gers at locations to be chosen along Interstate 5, the main north-south route through the Pacific Northwest.
